Happiness

The title of this blog came from the musical You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. In our world, there exists so many different interpretations of what happiness truly is. It appears that some feel that happiness comes from economic prosperity or doing what feels good. Or for all of you Wicked fans out there, "Happy is what happens when all your dreams come true." My personal opinion is that happiness comes by living right and clean lives.

Looking through Windows

Monday, May 13, 2013

This was my Mother’s Day gift to my wife, Elisabeth, who will soon be a mother herself.

The Shoe Horn and the Chair

A once clothes-scattered room with carefully hung, mismatched pictures was now full of boxes and echoes. A kitchen, once a place of hearty laughter, feasts of plenty and heartfelt expressions of love was reduced to scrubbed countertops and bare cupboards. The windows, which looked out into a beautiful, forested landscape and a bright future, now reflected inwardly to bountiful days of a bygone era. One by one—a box, a broom, a vase—the objects were carried away, leaving shadows of memories in corners and closets.

Through a window, a teasing breeze of spring air swirled throughout the house interrogating every nook. Playfully uncovering secrets from the past as it went, the breeze whispered gently into a room with only one curiosity: a chair. In a fanciful twist, the breeze surrounded the chair and probed its quiet memories. The faded floral pattern and worn upholstery remained silent, seemingly unwilling to yield an answer. So the teasing persisted.

A quiet and reminiscently happy melody started from within. Rays of sunshine danced like ballerinas in response. The somber atmosphere melted away at the touch of these light-filled, pirouetting sprites. In the corner, a tree with white flowers appeared, and the mantle became an arbor dressed with roses. The sprites continued their joyful dance until suddenly the room blossomed into a spring wedding. The guests, in their periwinkle-accented attire, gazed at the blissful couple, cheering, laughing and crying all at the right times. Of course, promises were made, joy was tangible, and love was sealed.

The sprites changed their dance and the wedding faded away leaving only a faded-floral chair and shoe horn in a drafty, two-room flat. The chair was hers, the shoe horn, his. With everything else left to work, love, and faith, the couple began their new life.

The scene changed again as the music pierced the air. A cry of pain. A surge of anxiety and excitement. He reached for the shoe horn and then the suitcase. She could only sit in her chair, careful breaths. Then tears of joy and relief at the sound of a newborn cry. It was a girl.

Again the music soared. Another cry of pain. Again he reached for the shoe horn and the suitcase, while she sat in her chair. Happiness followed as three went to four, five...

One by one, the children left just as they’d come. Only to return, with more of their own.

There were many comings and goings. The shoe horn was there for each adventure’s inauguration, and the chair was there for every day’s finale. He was her beginning, she was his end. Together, they cheered, laughed and cried all at the right times.

The sprites then stood still. There was nothing to say. The shoe horn was broken, beyond all repair. His eyes slept forever. Hers wept just the same in the faded, old chair.

She brought just a chair to the marriage. Just a chair? Times one hundred and two! For she gave so much comfort, peace, and completion to him. And he had just a shoe horn, too.

With one final note, the sprites bowed to a close. The memories dissolved and the breeze had its answer. In a twist of delight, it fled to the night. The room was now empty and no chair was in sight.

Perspective

Do you ever feel that you've been looking through dirty windows? I know that happens to me sometimes. I like this movie because it reminds me that I need to be better and not judge so quickly.

Shopping Cart!

Being in the Midwest has its perks. For example, it's humid, so I don't have to pay to go to a sauna, I just have to walk outside. Also, we have some pretty crazy thunder storms. I've already seen two intense ones.

My favorite experience however, occurred on Wednesday evening. It was cold in the morning and quite warm in the afternoon. So by evening time a big thunder cloud had formed on the horizon. My roommate and I were driving into the grocery store parking lot when all of a sudden the wind really picked up. I thought to myself, "Self, this appears to be tornado like weather," which my roommate later confirmed.

Anyway, we were stopped in front of the store when all of a sudden my roommate shouted, "Shopping Cart! Shopping Cart!" I looked at him funny wondering what in the world he was talking about. Then I looked in front of me to see an unmanned, empty shopping cart headed straight toward my cart going at least 10 mph. Seeing as how I didn't want a dent in my new vehicle, I gunned it through the intersection and barely missed being scraped by the unleashed terror on wheels. Apparently, I also narrowly missed being hit by the stop sign as well.

Possibly more unnerving is that we proceeded to park the car, walked inside and completed our grocery shopping with all of the other people in the store. No one seemed too concerned about the storm outside. Kind of crazy...

(There was no tornado by the way)

The Waking

So, I suppose that it's apparent that I'm in Indiana now, and it has been a really good change so far. As I was moving out here though I had words to this amazing poem run through my head almost constantly. I thought that I would share it with you all and I would love to hear your comments on it.
The Waking

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.

We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me, so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

Moments

I recently discovered this Mormon Message titled "Moments that Matter Most." It's become my new favorite. The cinematography was what gripped me the most. It caused me to think about the many, many moments that make up every day. Even more so, it caused me to think about the many, many moments that make up the memories of our lives. How often do I take the time to slow down and remember to spend time with the people that mean the most to me? How often do I remember to get up after I've fallen down and keep going. The success of our lives has every bit to do with the way we treat the moments that matter the most. I sincerely hope that I can do better at slowing down and taking advantage of the gift of time God has blessed me with.

As a side note, a friend recently pointed out that the music in this video is strangely familiar to
"Forbidden Friendship" on the How to Train Your Dragon soundtrack. That could also be a contributing factor as to why I like it so much.

My New Toy

Yup. I have a new car. A used 2006 Mercury Milan. This isn't a picture of my car, but it looks almost exactly the same. This is the last thing I needed in my preparation to go across the country and start graduate school at Purdue in the Fall.

Quick Wit

Here's some of the funny things that I have heard or said over the past few days. Hope you enjoy!
So, I'm currently living with one of the coolest people ever. (We'll call him D. Purnell--no, Dustin P.--to protect the innocent). He's Canadian living in the United States for schooling. What makes it particularly fun is that Dustin takes nearly everything I say seriously, at least until he realizes that I was joking. I get such a pleasure from saying a really punny comment, waiting for a few seconds, and then seeing the lights come on.
The other day we were talking about how when engineers in Canada become professionals they receive an engineering ring. The two engineers in the room, Dustin P. not included, then proceeded to say that in America we don't generally do that, but that it isn't unheard of. We then asked the fountain of all knowledge (Wikipedia) for the origin of such a practice. Apparently, the bestowal of an engineering ring originiated in Canada and migrated to the United States. Astonished by the mere possibility that something of Canadian origin moved to the US, Dustin P. exclaimed, "How often does that happen?"
"Well, Canadians do it all the time," I said.

Speaking of Canadians, I have a friend, Ms. Bennett I like to call her, that likes to ask lots of questions when she hasn't seen a person in a long while. Here's some of her questions and my answers in a recent email I sent.
Ms. Bennett: When introducing yourself, do you say that you are good friends with Ms. Bennett?
Mr. Darcy (Me): How could I not. They have Billboards everywhere mourning your loss. It's all I can do to console them.
Bennett: Have you been on any dates?
Darcy: Well, I stood on my calendar by accident, if that's what you mean.
Bennett: How's work?
Darcy:It's give and take. They give me money and I take it.
Bennett:What's the moral of "The Tortoise and the Hare"?
Darcy: There's a few of them. First, if you are fast, you should take a break for a long time because you will still finish the race. Second, comparing apples to oranges was never effective anyway. Third, there are way more turtles than hares, and the minority wins by default. And fourth, you can't tip a cow over.

My final funny story comes from last year. It's titled, That's Against the Honor Code.
So I was going to work last year and the custodial posted numerous signs up and down the hallway indicating that they were intending to refinishing the floor later in the week. I didn't think anything of it until I read it again the next day:
"Custodial will be stripping and waxing in this hallway on May 25 2010. If you need access during this time please contact Custodial at 422-5555."
"Hmmm..." I thought to myself, "That's definitely against the honor code."
It's amazing what one little preposition will do to the meaning of a sentence.

Here's Machu Picchu... oh and me too. (I lost the screw to my glasses, so I wasn't wearing all them all day)

One Eventful School Year

You know, I noticed an interesting phenomenon while reading Harry Potter last week. Every school year of Harry's ended in some type of catastrophe where he narrowly escapes with his life, then each school year starts off peacefully until the next climax a year later. You would think, at least any normal person would, that he would recognize a pattern....and then promptly move to Australia for the witness protection program.

Well, we can't all suffer from life-threatening catastrophes at the end of every school year, so I'll just give an update on my humdrum life. As a Senior at BYU I did what most people do: I graduated. The end.

Okay maybe not quite the end. I'm so excited to be finished. I'm actually surprised that I made it through all of my Chemical Engineering classes alive. I even managed a music minor on top of it all. Additionally, I got accepted to five different graduate schools and I just got back from a two week humanitarian trip in Peru. Now how cool is that?

The trip was a graduation present to myself. I'm so happy!

News update

Well, I just wanted to inform everybody that I ran a half-marathon and loved it! There's just something energizing about running with 1200 other people for 13 miles. By the way, I did finish it in 1 hour and 46 minutes and finished 198. Which is impressive, if I do say so myself. Although, it did take me about a week for my feet to recover, but I'm up and running again. Believe it or not, I think that I have been converted to running. Hmmm.... strange, I didn't think that would ever happen.

Second bit of exciting news, I am going to see 2 musicals in 2 weeks. The Lion King on Friday and then Wicked the next week
. I'm EXCSTATICALLY, MOST ENERGETICALLY, SIMPLY SHAMELESSLY EXCITED about both. But I don't like to show it.

Finally, I got to spend Friday with my favorite nephews at the Treehouse museum in Ogden. I watched Zach "bicker, bicker, bicker" on stage, and Sam as he tried to use scissors to make a crown. I'll admit, I'm glad that I have a few more years before I'll be a parent. Sam kind of scared me while he was using the scissors. But his mom was totally ok. I guess uncles just don't have the same gusto as moms. Big surprise. =-)

Oh, Danny Boy

As I said in my last post, Danny is leaving to go to Graduate School. That makes me kind of sad, so I made this little movie just to remember all of the good times that we've had here at BYU. I hope that you enjoy it!

Out of the Frying Pan and into Summer!!!

Ladies, isn't that the best looking group of guys you've ever seen? I know, I know it's overwhelming to look at, but I couldn't resist.

Okay, so it's been, shall we say, a long and very involved time since I last wrote. I figured that it was fine, since there probably aren't a whole lot of people following what I write anyway.

So I finished the school year just fine and guess what?!!! I've only got one more year to go before I graduate!!!! So watch out world, here I come! Or actually I guess it's only graduate school, but they are finally going to let me out of Provo.

Also recently, my roommate and really good friend, Danny Marler, decided that he wanted to graduate and move to Georgia, which besides being incredibly sad, is also really exciting for him. In honor of his memory (may he rest in peace), I decide to post some pictures. Warning, they might shock you because many of you have probably never seen me in sport's gear outside before.

Oh! And shocking fact #2, I'm planning on running a half-marathon in a month!!

Music to My Ears

So tonight on "What's that behind door number 1?" we will discover the new toys of Aaron. So for our first peak, we will look behind door number 1. Drum roll please..........

A fancy new shoe horn from Russia!!! You better believe it, that puppy is two feet of pure metal with the name of my mission engraved on the back. It's pretty much the best thing since sliced cheese. I got it from my mission president and his wife. Thank you so much President and Sister Collins!!!!

Okay, now it's time for a peak behind door number two. I know you can hardly wait any longer. Wait the handle is turning the door is creaking and lo and behold..... a new pair of headphones. These things are so much better than the ones that come with i-pods, they are soft and comfy and block out any distracting noise.

But why such the excitement about a pair of headphones you ask? Well let's look behind door number 3. I know, the excitement is intense. Another drum roll please...... Ladies and gentlemen it's not a bird, it's not a plane, it's not even that man wearing a weird costume with an S painted on his chest, it's a.....brand new keyboard!!!! And there was much rejoicing in the land. Well at least for my roommate and I. It's been pretty sweet to have a piano to play and relax with. I must say that I have been wanting one ever since I got to college, but now was the time. Anyway, I would love to write more about the exciting things in my life, but I've got an appointment with my keyboard. Ah... that is music to my ears.

BYU and Vacation

First of all, GO COUGARS!!!! That is awesome that we won our first game against Oklahoma State University yesterday! I'm pretty excited about that. The cheering and honking in Provo lasted at least an hour and a half. So that was pretty fun.

As you might have guessed the BYU school year has just begun and the first week of classes are completed. It's been a good experience so far and I think that I will be able to handle this semester with all of the many things that I have going on, like my trip to Washington, D.C. in November. The most exciting thing that has happened so far is that I made Concert Choir!!!!! I am so excited because we are singing with the King Singers and the BYU philharmonic
orchestra in October. How awesome is that? I haven't been able to sing in a mixed choir since I sang in Bonnevaires five years ago. Our first rehearsal was so refreshing because of the refined sound. Have I said I love to sing in the choirs at BYU? I found out Friday morning and I'm still pumped! I must admit that happiness sometimes is having your dreams come true.

Also yesterday, I went down to Capitol Reef with my family for a mini vacation. It was so much fun! We hiked around caves and took lots of pictures.

Zach, my nephew, is definitely photogenic and he knows it. There is hardly a picture taken without him finding the perfect pose. I've posted a picture as an example. So it's been a very fun weekend.

Life and a Little Bit of Politics

Hey all! I'm loving being at home for a little while before the craziness of school starts again. I just added a new section to my blog to give a chance for others to write what happiness is to them. I thought that it would be a good chance to get a wider definition of one of the greatest purposes in life. So if you've got something great to say, go ahead and comment.

On politics, I just wanted to say that I disagree with the current health care plan because I feel that it is forcing a generic health care plan on the entire country. Just thought that I would throw that out there.

On life, I just finished reading The Return of the King for the third time. I still love that book. It's pretty amazing, especially the ending. Sam is my hero. I did particularly enjoy this dialogue between Frodo and Sam:

'But,' said Sam, and tears started in his eyes, 'I thought you were going to enjoy the Shire, too, for years and years, after all you have done.'

'So I thought too, once. But I have been too deeply hurt, Sam. I tried to save the Shire, and it has been saved, but not for me. It must often be so, Sam, when things are in danger: some one has to give them up, lose them, so that others may keep them.'
~J.R.R. Tolkein

I am thankful to those that have given up so much, even their lives, so that I could keep the freedoms enjoyed by so many in this country.

Russia and American Football

Okay, so the two don't really go together very well. I mean Russians think that American football is kind of silly, and that football (soccer) is the true sport. I can't say that I completely disagree with them, but I must admit that I really do like good old American football. Which is why I'm glad that the season is coming up again and it looks as if I will be buying myself some tickets to BYU football.
Speaking of football, this is my younger brother's senior year and he's playing on the varsity team at his high school. The cool thing is, he made it into the Deseret News!! So for all of you NSHS fans out there, here's the link to John's claim to fame! http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705321258/High-school-football-North-Sevier-Wolves-2009-preview.html
Now about Russia, one of my personal favorite topics. So I was living in Idaho Falls for two months when the Meldrums decided to tell me that there was a Russian restaurant/store in town!! I was so excited to find this out, so I' went on two shopping sprees before I made the journey home. I bought a few siroks (which are mini cheesecakes) and some buckwheat and some apricot juice and some borsch seasoning packets, and everybody's favorite, Russian chocolate!!! I was so excited to bring all of that stuff home with me. My family and I are having a real Russian food night on Saturday. I'm pretty excited about the whole thing.

Here We Have Idaho

So, I'm down to the last few weeks in the beloved state of potatoes and apparently gems, but I'm not convinced in that area. I've had a lot of fun working at the INL this summer. Now I'm just down to the wire trying to finish up a paper.
This last week has been crazy for me. I've talked to so many of my friends trying just to keep up with them. But I've enjoyed every minute of it. Sarah is keeping Proctor and Gamble in check, Gerti is going to Texas for graduate school, Danny is thoroughly enjoying his work at BYU, and Nick invited me to accompany him as he played the trumpet. By the way, for any of you who haven't heard Nick play, he is awesome. So all in all I've been extremely blessed this summer with excellent friends, great co-workers, and a wonderful family. I'm not sure that I am ready for this summer to end. Which is why I plan on spending some time at home before that great and terrible day, August 31 arrives. =-)

P.S. Thank you all for your comments I really enjoyed them.

TUCSON!!!

So now that I have been informed that somebody is actually looking at this site, I have decided to update it. I am having an awesome time up here in Idaho working at the Idaho National Laboratory. I have seen spent nuclear fuel rods glowing blue under water and lots of other cool things. I just got back from a national conference down in Tucson, Arizona. It was the annual conference of the Institute of Nuclear Material Management and I learned all about how we are trying to keep track of nuclear material world wide. It was really an incredible experience. I have never been to a professional conference before and so it was definitely all new. I was surrounded by nearly one thousand people, all experts in their respective fields. A lot of them were Russian, so I can't complain in the least.
Since this was a business trip, I got a whole hotel room to myself. I've posted some pictures just for fun. I also got to drive a Mitsubishi Eclipse all week with air conditioning. I was so excited. As one person put it on the trip however, I just don't deserve a car like that. It's true. I don't know what to do with a sports car. :-)
The best part was trying to find places to eat in Tucson. On one night, we all tried to eat at a Mediterranean restaurant, only to find out that it doesn't exist anymore. Then we tried to meet at Sam's Club to regroup, couldn't find that either. Then we tried to go to a Cafe. Couldn't find that, so my car eventually ended up going to a Outback Steakhouse and the other two cars went elsewhere. It was hilarious at the time. Especially considering that we all had GPS's in each car. Apparently those machines are only so helpful.
Well, I would love to hear of any comments from any of you out there in Cyberspace.
Hope you enjoy the pictures. I know, that I definitely miss that hotel mattress. ;-)

Friday, May 15, 2009

Well, it looks as if I'm finally off to Idaho to begin my internship. This should be an exciting adventure. I'm mostly excited to "go back to my old stomping grounds" as many people have said. Yup, good ol' Bonneville County here I come. You could only keep me away for about five years.
But to be honest, it has also been really nice being home for three weeks and not having to work. I'm gotten quite a bit accomplished. However, all those mornings of sleeping in until seven thirty in the morning are almost over, on Monday I have to be at work at seven. Yay!! Actually, thank goodness for having work at all!

Prancing Ponies

So last night I went with my parents, my grandpa and my sister to go watch some horse dance to music and do some pretty amazing tricks. I've posted a few pictures. Forgive the quality. We didn't take a camera with us, so I had to rely on the great quality of my phone's camera. And just as an update, I'm almost finished with my second reading of the seventh Harry Potter book.
